There are moments when Attractio does look great – when you reach the top of a level and are staring down over it, or reach a window where you can gaze out over the ship, there’s plenty to enjoy. Other obvious environmental concessions are lava and acid that appear like one big flat texture, character feet and hands being removed in first-person view – but even without this, the environmental design here is derivative of other industrial puzzlers without bringing much of its own flavour. This is most notable when using the shifter gun, which shoots coloured beams which I’d imagine are supposed to be a nice light show, but just appear as weird squiggly lines here. The thing I noticed immediately was that the resolution must be very, very low as everything appeared jagged and lacking clarity even on the handheld’s screen.

I’m sure that on PC and PS4, Attractio is quite an attractive – on Vita, it’s been chopped down to within an inch of its life making for a fairly disappointing product aesthetically. I felt like I was really in Attractio, which was pretty impressive. I’d also note that there’s a lot of effort gone into selling the game show format here – the host talks to you between stages, floating cameras follow your every action etc. I wouldn’t say for a second that is a unique or even particularly memorable plot, but it is enjoyable to experience and I found myself wanting to uncover what was happening – the final quarter is a particular highlight as you hatch a plan to disrupt the status quo and it brings together three characters who had previously been on separate paths. Once the hacking group Ogun Hand take over the game and make the contestants question what they’re doing, the story kicks into overdrive. See, the ominous White Ark Company provide jobs and shelter to the people and also run the Attractio tournament – they’re foreboding in the way that Aperture are in Portal 2, a pretty face that seem to hide a sinister motive behind the scenes.

You’ll spend most of the game listening to Dalek moan how he was framed and Keir spewing propaganda like how his favourite food is the HardWorking burger, but this serves to feed into Attractio’s world-building which is thankfully much better than its characters.

They each have a backstory fully primed for TV entertainment and it was interesting to be introduced to them all, although they’re all mostly devoid of likable aspects to their characters. The three lucky competitors are Dalek, a prisoner accused of killing his girlfriend who is competing for his freedom Keir, a man who is fighting to win money to help the people back home and Mia, a young woman from Mars who wants to win technology to help fellow Martians. This year’s competition is a little different though as one of the participants has a secret that threatens to change everything.
